Second Green Apple prize awarded to The Hub

We’re delighted to announce that The Hub has received another award! In 2019, they won a Scottish Green Apple Award and because of the exemplary results achieved, Green Apple have presented them with one of their World Awards for Environmental Best Practice.

The Glasgow property, home to a variety of innovative and creative businesses, was nominated for its impressive waste management strategy, which was implemented by Facilities Manager Thomas Love.

On arriving at the scheme in 2017, Thomas found that no recycling was taking place and occupiers were receiving multiple refuse uplifts per week with no centralised coordination. Water consumption was also exceptionally high, so Thomas took on the vast project to reduce both consumption and costs by 20% within a year. Investigations took place to uncover the cause for the excessive water consumption and a waste management system was introduced. Occupiers were asked to start segregating their recycling and water pressure started to be monitored and adjusted at various points across the scheme. The results were outstanding, Thomas smashed his target and managed to reduce waste/water consumption and costs by a massive 65% over the year.

The Green Apple Awards have recognised the significant results achieved by the improvements, including 93% of waste now being diverted from landfill, which has led to a large reduction in transport to uplift waste.

‘Sustainability is now more important than ever and is a top priority for us here at The Hub and across Ashdown Phillips as a whole.’ says Thomas. ‘It’s great to have been recognised for all the hard work put in by both staff and occupiers to ensure that the site remains committed to its environmental aims.’

Looking to the future, the scheme is also in the running for the International Corporate Social Responsibility Excellence award, which will be revealed later this year.

Congratulations to all at The Hub!
